Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA)
Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) is done through x-ray imaging using a special modality known as dual-energy x-ray (DXA) scanning. A dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan measures bone tissue for evidence of osteoporosis. It can indicate your muscle mass, body fat, or bone density. It is most often indicated for women over age 65 years for the diagnosis of osteopenia as a result of decreased bone density. Osteopenia in postmenopausal women increases the risk for vertebra, hip, or Colles wrist fracture. This modality provides specific information about bone density as well as a detailed visualization of the vertebrae. It is indicated in individuals with a history of corticosteroid therapy, osteoporosis, osteopenia, height loss, bone fracture, or other systemic diseases leading to bone loss such as chronic kidney disease (CKD).
