Carotid duplex ultrasound
An ultrasound (US) or sonography uses high-frequency ultrasonic waves to look inside the body. A carotid ultrasound is performed in the office by the placement of a probe over the region of interest. Your doctor will be able to view and interpret the images while the test is being performed. Duplex ultrasound looks explicitly at the speed and direction of blood through the blood vessels. A common indication for a carotid duplex ultrasound is diagnosing and evaluating carotid artery disease (CAD) in patients with risk factors or a history of stroke.
